His Journey
Burl Ellis, affectionately called “Sonny” by his loved ones was born January 29, 1938, to the union of Annie Parks and Eugene Ellis, Sr. in Starkville, Mississippi. He accepted Christ at an early age and loved attending church services.
After receiving his formal education in Starkville, he relocated to Chicago Heights, Illinois. He immediately found a house of worship joining Calvary Baptist Church. He served on the usher board and was a faithful member for fifty-five years. He was employed by ARA Food Service Vending Hotel and Restaurant for thirty-eight years and was a member of local union #450. He worked at the Chicago Heights Ford Stamping Plant as the head cook and promoted to the position of head chef.
In 1967 he was united in holy matrimony to Kathryn Fulcher. To this union two children were born. Burl was quiet loving man with a zest for creating delicious meals. He loved planning gatherings for family and friends especially on holidays. Reading the Bible, playing card games and grilling was his passion. He was compassionate, faithful, and loyal son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. All of these words describe who Burl was and why he holds a special place in the hearts of his family and friends.
On Sunday, May 7, 2023, Burl departed this life to begin a special life in his heavenly home with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Burl was preceded in death by his mother Annie, father Eugene Sr., infant daughter Eve Lyn Joy, oldest son Burl Jr., brothers: Eugene Jr., Ulis, Willie, John, Saul, and Walter, sisters: Vera Mae and Melvina.
